Jacob A. Lattus, 82, a retired farmer, died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 at his farm home on the state line.

Born in Fulton County June 10, 1888, he was the son of the late Joseph Benjamin Lattus and Margaret Stahr Lattus. His father came to America from Poland, and his mother was originally from Indiana.

Mrs. Jacob Lattus, the former Sarah Elizabeth Hogg, died on November 30, 1970.

Mr. Lattus' death was unexpected. A man who loved the land all of his life, he was preparing to put out a small potato bed on the day of his death.

A devout Catholic, he believed in the sanctity of the home and that hard work was the keynote to a happy and wholesome life. He reared his large family with gentle devotion and stern discipline not only for his children, but for himself. He looked upon work, not as a chore, but as a dedication and an avocation. His children recall that for nearly all of his life he attended early morning services at his church, and ended each day with family prayer.

One of his sons remarked that all during the years he lived in his father's house, no matter how tired, or even how ill his father might be, the prayer services at home were held without interruption.

During his lifetime he was a very large land-owner, which property he and his sons operated. Mr. Lattus inherited the sturdy life of his ancestors, and though he was not formally educated in business affairs, he had a keen sense of knowing that only hard work produced the kind of wealth worth having.

And where his family and his home were concerned he had a boundless amount of sentiment and tradition. When he built a new home on his homegrounds, he had the old homeplace moved to a place a-top a hill near him where he could look at it and remember the early days of his life.

Although a prayerful man, and a no-non-sense individual he found complete relaxation and happiness with his family, his friends, and with the friends of his children.

Mr. Lattus was one of those individuals who will always be remembered with respect as a good and decent individual, and a man worth knowing as a friend.

Mr. Lattus is survived by seven sons: Hugh Lattus, Joe Lattus, John Jacob Lattus, and Charles E. Lattus, all of Hickman; Thomas Lattus of Woodland Mills; J.C. Lattus of Union City; and Guy Lattus of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania; two daughter: Mrs. S.G. Roof of Paducah and Mrs. Marion Gibson of Chattanooga; 31 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are one brother, Charles A. Lattus of Hickman, two sisters: Mrs. Katie McNeill and Mrs. W.O. Kaufman of Hickman; and two stepbrothers, G.B. Mangold and Phillip Mangold of Hickman. One brother, John H. Lattus, and a half brother, Raymond Mangold, preceded Mr. Lattus in death.

Mr. Lattus was a member of the Sacred Heart Church.

A prayer service was held Thursday, March 25 at the Barrett Funeral Chapel. Funeral services were held Friday, March 26 at Sacred Heart Church with Mr. Lattus' nephew, the Rev. Vincent Kaufman, officiating.

Burial was in the city Cemetery.
