Minutes of the ... Annual Session of the Detroit Conference ..., Volumes 47-53 By Methodist Episcopal Church. Detroit Conference

Silas P. Warner was born in New York state in 1820, and died at Saginaw the 20th of February, 1908, the years of his pilgrimage being consequently four score and seven. He was the oldest member of the Detroit Conference. And the years of his ministry exceeded by five, the age of the Detroit Conference, his ministry having begun in 1851.

Several men of renown in Methodism, and in this conference started on their journey the same year. And the records of the conference show that the year in which Bro. Warner entered, was rich in contributions to the ministerial force of Michigan Methodism. He was received on trial in the Michigan conference when the conference was held in Monroe, Bishop Morris presiding. There were eighteen in the class, Bro. Warner outlived them all. He was ordained at the first session of the Detroit conference by Bishop Morris.

He came to Michigan the year the territory was elected to statehood. The immediately succeeding years were spent on a farm near Hudson[, MI]. His conversion and growing sense of the call to the ministry led him shortly afterward to forsake the farm and give himself to the work of preaching the gospel.

His first appointments [since changed in name and into small charges] were, Oakville, Liberty, Ridgeway, Franklin, South Lyon, St Clair, and Grass Lake.

His work on these charges led up to the opening of the civil war. His patriotism and military spirit led him to answer his country's call. At the earnest solication of a number of men in his church, and in the community where he was preaching,he organized a company of soldiers, and as their captain, served with honor, receiving a severe wound upon the field. Having recieved a location in 1862, in order that he might be free for patriotic duty, he did not re-enter the ministry until 1869. Following which his appointments were Plymouth, Dansville, Holly, and Fowlerville. In 1874 he transfered to the Michigan Conference. After serving a number of important churches, he returned to the Detroit Conference serving the church at Wyandotte, Delray, Cambell Ave., and Ninde Chuch of Detroit.

He was a Christian gentlemen of ripened years, chaste in his words, and circumspect in his conduct. Those who have know him the best, love him best, for his intrinsic worth and his masterful work.

His Domestic relations in life were characterized by devotion to those joined to him in marriage, and committed to his care. His first marriage was solemnized in 1840, when Nancy Rogers of Hudson, Mich, became his wife, with whom he lived for more than half a century before she was called home. Six children were born to them, five of whom are living. In 1892 he married to Mrs. Converse of Wayne, who lived but two years after their marriage. Shorly after her death he married to Mrs Sybil Cleveland of Flint, who survives him and who is greatly afflicted, being totally blind, yet happy in the consolations of her religious faith.

Brother Warner had resided in Saginaw for the past three years where he was living at the time of his death. His funeral services were held in Martha Holmes Church, Detroit, conducted by his pastor. A. B Leonard of Saginaw, who was assisted in the services by othe ministers, including J.B. Oliver, W.H Shier, C Simpson, E.W. Ryan, Georege Hickey.
