Grace Dethrow Gamet, remembered the following [taken with permission from her autobiography for her 90th birthday]

"Grace Ruth. I named myself Ruth, as they did not give me a middle name and I just loved this name and still do. Papa wanted to call me "Marie" after an old girl friend. Mama somehow got wind of it, and no deal. She named me Grace. From A-1, I was a tomboy and worked in the fields right along with my father's hired hands. First, I want to say something of my Dad. He was a hard-working man - too much so as I see it now. When I was about 12, one summer our wheat was ripe for cutting and he made me ride the wheat binder. I mean the 4 horses that pulled it. I had to guide the horses on a straight row while he operated the binder. I would have loved it any other time. But not on Sunday. Old Man Gum, our weather man, said rain was coming. And the wheat would fall if it was not cut. I beat the hell out of the poor horses and tried to get Dad thrown off his high seat on the binder. Well, we cussed each other all morning and at noon he had had enough of ME. Besides, the preacher told him he was in sin to work on Sunday.

Another time I remember, he sent me to plant corn in holes where some corn was missing. Gave me a bucket of corn and a hoe, and off to the fields at ten years old to plant! I chased young rabbits, dug a big hole and dropped all the corn in it, played awhile with a pretty rock, and went to the house. In 10 days, up came the wad of corn, and he and Mama laughed."
