Obituary, Morrison's Cove Herald, 20 June 1902 page 1:
"Joseph G. Smelser -- On June 7 Joseph G. Smelser died at his home near Hopewell, Bedford County, from dropsey after a lingering illness, aged 74 years 6 months 15 days. He was a native of Crawford County, and at one time he was a resident of North Woodbury Township and was well known in the district following the occupation of plasterer. Thirity-five years ago he moved to Bedford County and began farming which occupation he followed until last fall, when he moved to Eichelberger Town near Hopewell, where he died. Besides his wife he is survived by these children: John, William, Mrs. Maggie Bowers, and Mrs Ellen Bowers of Hopewell; Mrs. Belle Malone of Johnstone[sic]; these sisters and brothers also survive him: Mrs. Rachel Smith of Bagley Iowa, Mrs. Elizabeth Reighard of Waterside, Mrs. J. B. Burket of near Henrietta, and Levi Smelser of Mobile Alabama. D. S. Smelser of this place is his nephew. He was a constant member of the M. E. Church of Eichelberger Town where a funeral service was held. Interrment was in Hopewell Cemetery."
