Howard Welton Pierce was born at Route 3, on Lake Ridge Farm on Clear Lake in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., Michigan on 6 September 1878; the son of Lemuel Packard and Louisa (Welton) Pierce. He spent his entire life in this area. He attended the Section School in the Corey Lake area. On 26 April 1899, he married Marie Emma Bullock in Centerville, St. Joseph Co., Michigan. Howard and Marie had four children. Howard had engaged in farming in the Three Rivers area for the last 60 years, farming the same acreage that his father purchased prior to entering service in the Civil War in 1860.

Howard died on 17 April 1968 at Lakeview Hospital in Paw Paw, Van Buren Co., Michigan, where he had been a patient for about four weeks. He is buried in Three Rivers, next to his wife.
