Giles and Ella Brownell, children of George Brownell and Louisa Welton were raised by their Brownell grandparents, Herman Brownell and Alira Blodgett Brownell, after Louisa married Lemuel. Lemuel was a farmer. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. His officers had trouble with him trying to make him keep his rifle clean, so they finally put him to driving a team in the Supply Department. He was in charge of a large train under General Grant at the close of the war. One day oral tradition tell us their orderlies had a race and Lemuel's horse won over the General's. Lemuel died March 3, 1904 near Three Rivers, Michigan. Louisa had a fine voice and sang in church choirs as did her father. In 1906 she was living in Dalton, Michigan where she had a millinery store. She finally moved to Los Angeles, California, where she lived with her daughter Ella Brownell Doster and died there November 10, 1933 and was buried in the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
In 1948, Robert Lee Harter and his wife Maxine Marie Pierce Harter (Louisa "Lizzie" Welton Pierce's granddaughter) graciously agreed to take Louisa's son Howard Welton Pierce to Los Angeles, California to see his mother's grave.
