The following biography of Ethel Lucille (Pierce) Miller has been contributed by a relative, Sharman Ankenbruck:

Ethel Lucille Pierce first born child of Howard Welton Pierce and Marie Emma Bullock was born January 29, 1902 on Lake Ridge Farm in Fabius Township, St.Joseph County, Michigan. She was reared in the best of two worlds that being the lake and the farm. Howard and Marie's farm property was on Clear Lake. The house set high on a hill over looking the lake. As a young girl she attended Corey Lake School completing eight grades, graduating in 1920. Ethel had three siblings; Howard "Foster", Welton Denny and Maxine Marie. Ethel traveled to Kalamazoo, Michigan Normal School where she completed her studies and received her teaching certificate. She taught in area schools in the St. Joseph County Michigan schools. She married Otto Laverne Miller on Christmas Day, December 25, 1922 In Centreville, Michigan. Otto was the son of Wellington A. Miller and Carrie Melissa Clendenin of Cass County, Michigan. Two sons were born to them Nyle Cameron born 1923 and James "Stanley" born 1925. They divorced in about 1929 but according to the 1930 census they remarried and a third son was born to them Carlson "Vaughn". A time of honor and gratitude occurred when both sons Nyle and Stanley served in the military during World War II. According to Michigan Divorce Records Ethel and Otto divorced again February 1, 1952, but both continued to support their three sons together until Otto's death on September 14, 1956. In the early 1960's Ethel moved to Sturgis, Michigan because her two sons, Nyle and Vaughn, were living there with their wives and children and she wanted to be near them. Ethel's third son, Stanley married and raised his family in Battle Creek, Michigan. Ethel and Otto's sons formed a partnership and owned several Standard Oil Service Stations in the area. Throughout Ethel's life she was a very giving, loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, daughter and sister. Ethel cared for her parents in their elderly years by going back to Lake Ridge Farm and tending to their needs. She took in her brother, Howard "Foster" Pierce during the years before his death. Following the tragic death of her Daughter-in-Law, Mary (Timm), wife of her son Vaughn Miller, she lived with her son to help care for his eight children (her grandchildren). She was a progressive woman who valued family and implemented the work ethic and loving, supportive spirit of her parents. Ethel died on December 24, 1993 at 91 years of age and is buried at Riverside in the Miller plot with Otto and their sons and daughters-in law.
