Forest L. "Butch") Slaven, 76, died suddenly at his Bridge street home in Ripley
Friday from a heart attack following a long illness.'

Born in Monterey, Va., he was the son of the late Harry and Maud Sepilten Slaven,
and a retired Jackson Herald linotype operator, a member of the Epworth Methodist
Church. He also belonged to the K. of P. Lodge and the Dokie Temple, Charleston.

Survivors include his wife, Dora, one son, Harry William Slaven of Ripley; one
daughter, Miss Audrey M. Slaven of Ripley; one sister, Mrs. Elsie Lundsford,
Wilmington, Del.; one brother, Bruce Slaven, Harrisonburg, Va. and three
grandchildren, Gary Lee Slaven, Mike Slaven and Janyce Slaven.

Mr. Slaven retired from the Jackson Herald after 25 years; he had previously worked
on several newspapers including the Gallipolis Ohio Tribune, the Charleston Daily
Mail, The Daily News Record at Harrisonburg, Va., the Roanoke Times, the Waynesboro,
Va., News and the Loudon Times Mirror at Leesburg, Va.

Funeral services were held at the Vail Funeral Home, Ripley, Monday with the Rev.
Basil Hensley officiating.

Internment was in the Pine Hill Cemetery.
