MRS. H.F. SLAVEN, DIES IN DELAWARE
(From Harrisonburg News Record) Mrs. Maude Siple Slaven, mother of Bruce Slaven and well known in Harrisonburg where she had spent much time in recent years, died Sunday afternoon, January 21, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elsie Lunsford, Wilmington, Del. Her husband, H.F. Slaven, died July 25, 1935. They were united in marriage April 14, 1885. Mrs. Slaven was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Siple and lived the greater part of her life in Monterey. She was born in Pendleton County, W. Va., Nov. 24, 1864, being in her 86th year. She is survived by one brother, William M. Siple, Mendon, Illinois, and a number of half brothers & sisters. Besides her daughter, Mrs. Lunsford. Mrs. Slaven leaves the following children: Paul S. Slaven, Sandston; Forest L. Slaven, Ripley, W.Va.; H. Bruce Slaven, Harrisonburg; a daughter, Elizabeth Margaret died Oct. 20, 1891, and a son, John E. Slaven, passed away May 30, 1943. Mrs. Slaven, until the death of her husband, resided at Monterey. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, and actively engaged therein until prevented by age & ill health. She was a member of the Harrisonburg Methodist Church. The body arrived in Harrisonburg early Tuesday morning and rested at the Lindsey Funeral Home on South Main Street until 11:00 when it was taken to the church at Monterey where it will lie in state until the hour of the services. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, January 23, at two thirty from the Monterey Methodist Church, with her pastor, Dr. H.W. Landrum in charge of the services assisted by the Rev. A.E. Johnson. Burial was in the family lot in the . Monterey Cemetery.
