Erwin and Elizabeth married on 10 June 1913
at Saco, York, Maine.
They were the parents of two children;
Erwin Richardson, Barbara Muirhead.

On 5 June 1917 Erwin signed up for the draft at Biddeford as Private 1st class. On 27 November 1918 he was honorably discharged on demobilization from the U. S. Army.

Erwin R. Gowen, age 74, died Wednesday afternoon in his home at Saco.
Educated in Biddeford schools, he graduated from Biddeford High School.
He worked for his father in his blacksmith shop at Biddeford.
Then he was employed for over 40 years for the E. Corey Company.
A World War I Veteran, he was a charter member of the Tighe-Beaudoin-Farley American Legion Post, and a past commander of the post.
He was the organizer of the famed Philip Tighe Drum and Bugle Corps, which was recognized throughout the country as a first place tophy winning group at National American Legion conventions in St. Louis, Chicago, Boston, and, California. He served for many years as drum major of the drum corps.
He was a member of the Kora Temple Shrine; Bradford Commandery; Dunlap Lodge of the F & A M; and, Adah Chapter O.E.S. He served as a deputy sheriff in the York County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Saco.
Interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
