OBITUARY - 22 September 1938:
***************************
Captain Erwin S. Gowen, age 79 years and
2 months and 18 days, died last night in his home at Biddeford.
He was a life long resident of Biddeford,
and one of the best known and most highly esteemed citizens.
He attended the local schools. He learned
the trade of blacksmith and worked at this occupation many years, conducting a shop of his own for a great many years, and at his retirement being one of the oldest blacksmiths.
He was a Spanish War veteran, serving as Captain of Company G. of this city and was active for several years as a member of the Colonel L. H. Kendall camp.
He always took a great interest in the fire department. He entered the department as a torch bearer in the early days and continued actively as a member up to recent years, rising in the department to the position of engineer,
a position he held on the old steam engines
for years. He probably knew more of the local history of the local department than any other member.
In fraternal circles, he was an active member
of Dunlap Lodge, York chapter; Maine council; Bradford commandery; Knights Templar; Laconia Lodge, I.O.O.F. In all these circles
he took a deep interest as long as his health permitted.
A man of unusually genial disposition, he easily made friends and enjoyed the friendship of a host of residents in this city and vicinity in the various circles with which he was identified. There were few in the city who did not know Captain Gowen, and it seemed that there were few men he did not know. He had a remarkable memory and greatly enjoyed recounting the old days and times. He stored a fund of information concerning Biddeford and frequently contributed this information to the Journal relating to happenings and people in the old days here. Always jolly and ready with a humorous or interesting story of early history, he was a welcome member of all circles.
