SANTA BARBARA PRESS - 13 December 2006:
*************************************
Barbara Gowen Utman passed away on December 6, 2007 in Cottage Hospital at
Santa Barbara.
She grew up at Saco in Maine where she graduated from Thornton Academy in 1938.
After attending the five year School of Nursing Program at the University of Maine she graduated in 1943 as a Registered Nurse.
She served as an ensign in the Navy from 1943-1945.
While stationed at New York City, she met Robert Utman, of Los Angeles, a fellow Navy Serviceman, who was a patient of hers at St. Albans Hospital. They married, then returned to Southern Maine after the war.
While raising their three daughters, Barbara worked as an operating room nurse at the Trull Hospital at Biddeford, and later taught Pediatrics at the Maine Medical Center's School of Nursing at Portland.
In 1968 Robert's Raytheon job brought a relocation at North Dighton in Massachusetts. While there, Barbara joined the faculty of Brockton Hospital's School of Nursing as Pediatrics Instructor.
In 1973 another Raytheon transfer brought Barbara and Robert to Santa Barbara in California.
After working as a part time nurse for the Santa Barbara School system for a few years, Barbara retired from nursing in the late 1970's.
Barbara enjoyed taking cooking classes, reading, traveling with Robert and their friends, learning to square dance, and the
Red Sox.
She was a loving wife and mother, a doting grandmother, and was a compassionate friend. She will be dearly missed.
