BIDDEFORD JOURNAL- 30 December 1933:
**********************************
James E. Gowen died this morning in the Webber Hospital. He had been in failing health for several years, but his condition did not become serious until recently. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition a few day ago from the home of his daughter, Mrs. David Grindle, where he had been making his home.
After attending the local schools, he learned the molders trade and worked at this for a short time. He then entered the livery stable and express business and conducted this business for many years until his retirement several years ago.
In his younger years he was actively associated with several fraternal orders and also active in many other circles in the city.
He was probably one of the best known residents of this city, many remembering the genial expressman, although he had been retired from active business for several years. Up until his recent illness he maintained his keen interest in the fire department. During his 69 years as a member of the Biddeford fire department, he saw many changes take place there in personnel and equipment of the department and probably knew as much of the history of the department as any of the present residents of the city. He had been elected torch boy of the old handtub 'Triumph' when he was 13 years old. In all the years, he has missed only two alarms, and that was when he was out of town.
