**********************************************************

Again Wakarusa was clouded with sorrow Monday morning, when the terrible news reached her that Eldon Smeltzer, 31, and his nephew, Roy Smeltzer, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Smeltzer, both of this place were killed at Van Wert, Ohio, early Monday morning when their freight truck in which they left Wakarusa at 11 o'clock Sunday night was struck by a train.

The news reached here at about 4 am and was relayed by phone so that the entire community was made aware of the terrible fate of two of her young men. The news was kept from Eldon Smeltzer's mother until later in the day because it was feared that the shock might prove fatal to her. She has been critically ill of a heart affliction for some time.

Eldon Smeltzer was the son of Mr and Mrs David Smeltzer, who live in Wakarusa, and Roy Smeltzer was the son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Smeltzer of north of town. As both young men have lived here since birth they were well known in this community.

The Yoder ambulance brought the bodies to the Yoder Funeral Home, Monday afternoon.

IN TRUCKING BUSINESS

Eldon Smeltzer, who had been in the trucking business for a number of years, entered a contract with the Hinchcliff Motor Co, two and a half months ago to haul freight from Chicago to various points in Indiana and Ohio. He employed his nephew, Roy, as his helper six weeks ago. Because of the serious illness of his mother, Eldon had remained in Wakarusa last week and Roy took the truck on its regular run, with Howard Harrington of Wakarusa as his assistant.

Roy Smeltzer and Harrington reached Wakarusa at 9 pm, Saturday enroute from Chicago to Macomb, Ohio, with a load of tankage. By Sunday Eldon's mother had shown some improvement, and he decided to take up the work again. At 11 o'clock Sunday night he and Roy accompanied by J Ohlen Smeltzer, Eldon's brother, set out on the trip to Macomb.

Ohlen Smeltzer was planning to purchase a new truck in Fort Wayne, as he had also taken a contract with the Hinchcliff concern. He therefore rode only as far as that city, and thus escaped injury or possible death in the accident.

Roy Smeltzer, who had spent Sunday with his parents, attended the Holdeman Mennonite church one mile west of Wakarusa, with his father Sunday night. After returning from church, he prepared to go on the trucking trip with his uncle and his father accompanied him to the David Smeltzer home at Wakarusa, from which the start was made.

Miss Lola Canen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Clayton Canen, of five and a half miles northeast of Wakarusa, visited Sunday at the Clarence Smeltzer residence. She is employed at the Chicago Telephone Supply Co, in Elkhart and rooms in Elkhart through the week. Eldon Smeltzer accompanied her to her Elkhart lodgings Sunday evening prior to his departure for Macomb. He and Miss Canen were engaged to be married but no date had been set for the ceremony.

Eldon Smeltzer is survived by his parents and by his brothers, Clarence and Ohlen.

Roy Smeltzer's mother died eight years ago. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Mr and Mrs Clarence Smeltzer; by two sisters, Ruth, 15, and Viola 12, and by two half-brothers, Dale, 4, and Ralph, 17 months.

FUNERAL SERVICES

As Mrs David Smeltzer, mother of Eldon, is so critically ill at her home, both bodies were taken to the Clarence Smeltzer home, north of town, where at 1 pm, this Wednesday a short fervice was conducted. Another service was held at the Olive Mennonite church, at 1:30. The Rev O L Flesher and the Rev Silas Weldy officiated. The casket of Eldon was not opened.
