Hays -- Alfred Doerfler, 82, died Monday, May 27, 1996, at St. John's of Hays, where he had been a resident since September of 1993. He was born Feb. 21, 1914 at Munjor, the son of Albert and Anna Rohr Doerfler.

He was a graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy in 1934. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1325, Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Ministry of Praise and Thomas More Prep-Marian Alumni Association.

On June 7, 1937 he married Flora Staab at Catherine. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Richard, Overland Park, and Charles, Hays; a daughter, Carolyn Jacobs, Hays; a brother, Alvin, Morris, Ill.; a sister, Marcella Pfannenstiel, Munjor; a stepbrother, Eugene Doerfler, Wichita; a stepsister, Henrietta Unrein, Hays; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine step grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Minnie Zimmerman.

The Fourth Degree Knights will stand honor guard at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. A Parish Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home, followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fathers Earl Befort, Paulinus Karlin, Curtis Carlson and Bill Surmeier presiding.
