Eugene Doerfler, 65, former Hays resident died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at the Veterans Hospital, Wichita. He was born July 8, 1932, in Hays to Albert and Angela (Pfannenstiel) Doerfler.

He was a graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy of Hays. He was a Army veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, VFW, American Legion and former Elks member, all of Hays. He was a former car salesman at James Motor and an under sheriff in Ellis county.

Survivors include his sons, Mike, Hays, Tom, Salina, and Brad, Orriville, Ohio; a daughter, Pat Klaus, Hays; a brother, Alvin D. Morris, Ill.; two sisters, Marcella Pfannenstiel, Munjor and Henrietta Unrein, Hays, and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Mark and John, a brother, Alfred, and a sister, Minnie Zimmerman.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church, Munjor, with Father Earl Befort officiating; burial with military honors by the VFW at the St. Francis Cemetery, Munjor. A parish vigil service is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. Visitation is from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Catholic Church or St. Francis Cemetery Association.
