YOUNG MAN DROWNED

A sad drowning took place at about 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon in which Harry Gilbert, a young man of 22 years of age met death. The drowning occurred in the Blackhawk about three miles from this city and in the rear of the farm of the young man's father, Frank Gilbert. The funeral of the young man was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Universalist church.

Harry Gilbert in company with Arthur Andrews and George Benedict went to the creek in the afternoon for a swim. They had been in the water for some minutes when Harry who was standing on a sand bar commenced to sink, the sand bar on which he was standing sifting out from under him and taking him down and into the current of the stream which is quite swift at present. The young man could not swim and called to his companions for help. Both of the young men hurriedly swam to his side secured hold upon the drowning young man. However the young man struggled so hard in his efforts to free himself and save his own life that one of the young men was forced to leave go of his hold and the burden of young Gilbert fell upon the other young man. He struggled furiously with the young man whose desperate efforst finally forced him to loosen his hold and the drowning young man sank out of sight into the swift running waters.

Help was summoned by the young man and after a few moments the body was found and taken to the home of the father but a short distance away. The sadness of the death is a great surprise and sorrow to many friends of the young man who was well known in the county, about the city and in Waterloo. The mother and family are almost heart broken at the sudden calling of the young man from their midst.

The young man is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gilbert, and three brothers and four sisters. The brothers are all young men, the youngest being about seventeen years of age. They are Seth, Edward and Joseph, all of whom live at home with the mother and father. The sisters are Mrs. Kate Brooks of Dewar, Mrs. Alma Harding and Mrs. Harry Bisbey of this city.

The funeral was held from the home about three miles from the city on the Blackhawk road. Short services were held from the home at 1 o'clock this afternoon and funeral services proper were held from the Universalist church at 2 o'clock this afternoon and were conducted by Rev. York. Interment was made in Fairview.
