MONDAY NOVEMBER 21, 1949


JOHN RILEY HARRIS

John Riley Harris, 81, a retired Frisco switchman, and a resident of this city since 1889, died Sunday morning at 2:10 at his home at 124 1/2 South Scott. Death is attributed to a fall he suffered at Pittsburg on Oct. 26 when he fractured his right arm and pelvis.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ardelia Moore and Mrs. Katherine Jackson of Fort Scott, Miss Jenny Harris of the home and Mrs. Freeda king of San Diego, Cal. One daughter is deceased. There are five grandchildren.

His wife, Mrs. Kate Harris was killed Oct. 10, 1936, in an auto accident, three miles east of the city.

The deceased, a son of Simeon and Katherine Harris, was born in Dade County, Mo., Sept. 17, 1868. He came to Fort Scott from Cherokee, Kas., in 1889 and entered the employ of the Kansas City, Fort Scott and Gulf railroad as a brakeman. He later was made a switchman and he retired in 1936 because of disability.

He was married to Kate Ward in this city on Oct. 12, 1897. He was a member of the Eagles lodge and loved sports, his hobby being baseball.

The funeral will held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Cheney Memorial chapel with the Rev. Paul E. Ehley of the Christian church officiating. Interment will be in the Centerville cemetery. Members of the Eagles lodge are requested to attend.

The body will be at the Cheney Parlor chapel until the hour of the services.

The Rev. Paul E. Ehly of the First Christian church conducted funeral services for John Riley (Jack) Harris, retired Frisco switchman, who died last Sunday, at the Cheney Memorial chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Railroad employees, members of the Eagles lodge, Just a Mere Sewing club, Mary and Martha class of the First Christian church, and employees of the Western Insurance and Lotterer Furniture store, attended in a body.

Music was furnished by Mrs. Esther Ehly, who sang two requested solos. Mrs. Frank Decker was the organist.

Interment was in the family lot in the Centerville cemetery. Pall bearers were Gerald D. Smith, Bob Jackson, Bob Jones, L.C. Keal, Emil B. Brunetti and Ken Duncan.

Out-of-town relatives here for the services were Mrs. Freeda King, San Diego, Cal.; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Jones, Pittsburg; Mr. and Mrs. C.Z. Miller and Robert Jones, Garland; Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Duncan, Kansas City.
