Tragedy stuck this week in 1901 in northern Bingham County, when Joseph France Jr. was killed by the kick of a horse.
According to eyewitnesses, the young man had ridden the horse to the family's new home, 2 1/2 miles east of Shelley. He left the horse in the stable, left, and then returned to take the saddle off. While going up to the horse, he gave it a slap on its hindquarters. The horse responded with a kick, whereupon the young man gave the animal a vicious kick.
The horse responded with both rear hooves and got France in the stomach. He died about 20 minutes later.
