Loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister "The Boss", passed away July 18, 2002.
Born December 7, 1933 to Archie C. Bess and Rose Butterfield of Holladay, Utah. Betty Jean was a member of the LDS church. She worked as a medical assistant and lab technician. Graduated from BYU School of Nursing in 1973 and worked at St. Marks Hospital as a registered Nurse from 1973 to 1986. She enjoyed her nursing career.
Betty Jean also assisted her husband with the development and management of Fore Lakes Golf Course, Taylorsville, Utah. She was instrumental in making the golf course the success it is today. She was Past President of Hidden Valley Ladies Association (1980). She enjoyed gardening, golfing, dancing, playing bridge, and hanging out with her great-grandchildren.
Married Gary C. Asplund, August 3, 1951, later divorced; married Vaughn Barker November 12, 1966. She loved him very much.
Survived by husband, Vaughn; daughter, Pamela (Gary) Harmer; son, Brad G. (Norma) Asplund; sons, Todd (Shauna) Barker, Bryan (Diana) Barker; daughter, Robyn (Tom) Gray, Nancy (Clarence) Fields, Vaunalee (Seth) Fordham; five grandchildren, Kim, Ashley, Jason, Tazia, Bradli Jo; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Cailee, along with 18 step-grandchildren, whom she loved very much. Brothers, Val and Bill Bess; sisters, Ardonna Bowden, Laura Stephenson, Afton Edwards. Preceded in death by her mother, father, brothers Archie and Wayne, sister Rose.
Funeral service were held on Tuesday, July 23, 12:00 noon, Taylorsville Stake Center, 1400 West 4800 South, Taylorsville, Utah. Friends visited with the family on Monday, July 22, 6-8:00 p.m. at the McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Tuesday at the church from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment: Redwood Memorial Estates.
