Marcell C. "Tubby" Becker

HARTINGTON -- Marcell C. "Tubby" Becker, 67, Hartington, died March 18, 2005, at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, S.D., of an apparent heart attack.

Visitation was March 20 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, and continued at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with a rosary and a vigil service held later that evening.

Mass of Christian Burial was March 21 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Rev. John Pietramale, Msgr. Cyril Werner, Rev. Tim Lange and Rev. Paul Hoesing concelebrating.

Burial was in the St. Michael's Cemetery, Hartington, with Military Services conducted by the Hartington VFW Post #5283.

Pallbearers were his sons and sons-in-law, Keith Becker, Gayle Becker, Doug Becker and Darin Becker, Shane Slaughter, Matt Steffen and Ben Hussey.

Marcell was born Dec. 11, 1937, to Frank and Hulda (Hochstein) Becker in Hartington. He grew up on a farm northwest of Hartington, graduating from Holy Trinity High School in 1955, and serving in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960. He married Denelda Lammers Feb. 7, 1961, at Fordyce. He farmed and had a cattle feeding operation northwest of Hartington. He bought the Hartington Elevator in 1984 and began Becker Trucking in 1985.

He enjoyed boating, going to cattle sales, morning coffee with the guys, trucking, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and a former member of the Holy Trinity School Board and Finance Committee, the Knights of Columbus, Cedar County Catholic Schools and Parishes Blue Ribbon Development Committee, and the Cedar Catholic Endowment Board. He was also a member and served as president of the Hartington Rural Fire Department Board.

Marcell is survived by his wife, Denelda, Hartington; seven children and their spouses, Keith and Bette Becker, Hartington; Joan and Ben Hussey, Des Moines, Iowa; Gayle and Rhonda Becker, Hartington; Diane and Shane Slaughter, South Sioux City; Brenda and Matt Steffen, Hartington; Doug and Sheila Becker, Hartington; and Darin and Angie Becker, Hartington; 23 grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Roman "Bud" and Esther Becker, and Kenneth and Sheree Becker, all of Hartington; two sisters and their husbands, Jolene and Harold Leise, Hartington, and Alice and Marcel Lammers, Pincer Creek Alberta, Canada; and a sister in law, Jeanine Johnson, Crofton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, infant Deila Velma Becker and LaVerne Pick; and a brother, David Becker.
