Funeral services for Dr. John Lyman Bates, 84 year-old, Gridley Chiropractor who died in sleep at his home at 525 Sycamore Street last Friday, were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Block Funeral Home.
A native of Gerry, NY, born there July 18, 1882, he was the son of the late James and Melissa Bates. He came to Gridley from Sinclaierville, NY, 46 years ago and had been a resident of this community since this time.
Dr. Bates was a graduate of the Palmer School of Chiropractics and had been a Chiropractor for the past 50 years, 46 in Gridley. He was also engaged in farming when he first came to this community and, prior to WWII, had gold mining interests in the Sierras.
In his younger days, he was a professional baseball pitcher and played for the Rochester, NY team in the Hudson River League.
His wife, the late Gladys Ames Bates, preceded him in death in March of 1958.
He is survived by a son, John A. of Gridley; a grandson, James J. Bates of Columbia, MO; grandaughters, Mrs. Janice Howell and Mrs. Tony Reynolds of Gridley and Mrs. Brenda Beehler of OH; and seven great-grandchildren.
Rev. Holtzman Frazier of the Biggs Community Methodist Church officiated at the services. Soloist Merrill Womach sang, "Beyond The Sunset" and "The Lord's Prayer". Cremation followed at Sierra View
Memorial Park, Marysville. Interment of the ashes will be held later in the family plot at the Gridley-Biggs Cemetery.
