Little is recorded about Melissa, but she was the oldest daughter of Vermont natives Lyman and Ruby Andrus, who settled in Gerry, NY. She had two younger sisters, Maria and Alma. Melissa married James Bates, Jr. about 1864. They had three sons: Rensselaer (1865-1870), named for a late brother of James; Seth Fred (1871-1940) who was adopted as an infant by James and Melissa and whose birth parents remain unknown to this writer; and James Lyman "Chap" (1882-1967). They also had one daughter, Mary D. Bates Hunt, born 1883.
Rensselaer and Seth are both buried in Evergreen Cemetery, and James L., who moved to California in 1921, is buried in Gridley, CA.
In the 1910 census, the recently-widowed Melissa was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Warren and Mary Hunt, in Gerry. In the 1920 census, Melissa was living in the home of her son James L. and Gladys and their sons James Milton, and John/aka Jonathan. It is not clear where she lived after James and Gladys moved to California, but her death was recorded in Westfield, NY.
