Bates-Davis Nuptials

MAYVILLE,NY, Dec. 28 - James Bates and Miss Grace Davis, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ira L. Davis, were married Christmas Day at the Peacock Inn. With Rev. A. R. Morrell, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating. The ceremony took place in the Rose room at the Inn, which was appropriately decorated with Christmas greens and cut flowers, in the presence of friends and relatives of the couple, including the parents of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. Bates will reside at the Peacock Inn.


James M."Chap" Bates, 58, of 29 N. Erie St., Mayville, died in Gridley, CA, Saturday (June 30, 1962) after several years illness. He was in CA visiting his father, Dr. James L. Bates, at the time of his death. Mr. Bates retired from the NYS Highway Department in 1958 because of ill health. During WWII he served for three years in the Pacific Theater with the Navy Seabees.

He was a member of William L. Travis Post, American Legion, Mayville, and the Mayville Conservation Club. Mr. Bates was born in Sinclairville, Sept. 2, 1903 to Dr. James L. and Gladys Ames Bates. He lived in Mayville since 1934.

On Christmas Day 1934 he married the formar Grace Davis who survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Miss Brenda BAtes, Mayville, and Mrs. Tonya Reynolds, Gridley, CA; four grandchildren; his fatehr, Dr. James L. Bates; a brother, John Bates, Gridley; several nieces and nephews.

Cremation and burial will take place in Gridley, following private funeral services at the Block Funeral Home in that city at the convenience of the family.
