A graveside memorial will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, at the Gridley-Biggs Memorial Cemetery in Gridley, for John A. Bates, 82, who passed away September 21, 1999.

Following the memorial, a wake to celebrate the life of a much loved father, grandfather and friend will be held at the family home.

John A. Bates was born December 20, 1916, in Jamestown, NY. He was a resident of Gridley for over 70 years. Graduating from Gridley High School in 1936, he attended Chico State and graduated from th
e College of Mortuary Science in San Francisco in 1940. He was Deputy Coroner in Butte county until he joined the US Army in January, 1943.

During his tour in WWII, he served with Patton in Tank Destroyer Unit 610, fighting in Southern France and Central Europe and participating in the liberation of the German prison camp, Dachau. He was honorably discharged on November 7, 1945.

Before retiring in 1962, he worked for several establishments, including Block Funeral Home, Stolhman's Service Station, Grass Valley/Valley Meat Packing Company, Gray Lodge Refuge and Butte College.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hazel Grossen Bates, who passed away in 1993.

He is survived by his son Dr. James J. Bates of Novato, CA, one daughter Janice L. Coulson of Stockton, CA and three grandsons, Dr. Jeffery D. Howell of NY, NY, Dr. Michael J. Bates of Norfolk, VA and Dr. Steven J. Bates of Chicago, IL.

He is also survived by his niece, Tonia M. Reynolds of Gridley and her children, Michael, Dennis, Robert and Lynn; and his niece Brenda Beehler of Brocton, NY and her children, David, Chris and Susan. Numerous other nephews and nieces and honorary great-grandson Griffith Teague survive John as well.

The family suggests memorials be sent to a favorite charity in his name.
