Joe was one of 21 children of Elisha Edwards. He served as a Marine medic in WW I in France ( receiving the Croix de Guerre from the French government and a Purple Heart with palm leaves from the US gov't), stayed there with the occupied forces for a year following Armistice. Upon return to the USA he attended Mississippi College, Clinton, MS, where he excelled in sports- especially baseball. He was drafted into minor league baseball then, briefly, into the major leagues. He married Laura Belle Clark of Clinton,MS. They had one son, James Milton Edwards, and one granddaughter, Patricia Edwards Berry. He was killed in a carwreck returning to Pontotoc, MS from quail hunting in Calhoun County.
