Veteran of three Campaigns Dies; Old friends have Charge of Services
With full military honors, Nels Petersen 67 a veteran of three wars, was buried in Ord Cemetery. He died late last Wednesday after a lingering illness of many months.Spanish-American War comrades had charge of services at the grave and N.J. Johnson of Wolbach, a life long friend of the deceased conducted services at the home of Mr. Petersen's sister, Mrs Emelie Johnson, who cared for him during his fatal illness.
A life of action was Mr. Petersen's. Born at Hyllested Denmark on September 6, 1861, he lived there until he reached manhood, coming to Ord in 1883. He fought in the Indian War at the battle of Wounded Knee and later, when the United States declared war against Spain; he enlisted in Co.B 2nd Nebraska Volunteers, and served throughout the war as a sergeant. When America entered the World War, though Mr Petersen was past the age limit, he again sought to serve his adopted country on the field of battle. Being rejected for military service by this country he went to Canada and enlisted serving overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary forces.
Mr Petersen leaves eight children, six of whom have grown to manhood and womanhood. The other two, Montague and Peter Richard Petersen will make their home with Mr Petersen's sister, Mrs Emilie Johnson. Deceased also leaves several sisters and one brother. Those who live near Ord are Anders Petersen, Mrs. Aagaard and Mrs Johnson. At the home of the latter the deceased made his home for the past six years and was tenderly cared for during the illness and death.
Funeral services were conducted according to the wishes of the deceased. His fried N J Johnson had charge of brief services at the home and an eulogy was read by C S Watson commander of the Ord Spanish American war veterans post, also a long-time friend of Mr. Petersen. At the grave taps were blown by Ivar Hautala. Pallbeareres included five former war comrades of Mr. Petersen, all from North Loup and three Ord American Legion members.
