Nancy (Kimbrel) Sheffield and Counce Sheffield Biography

Nancy Kimbrel was the daughter of Millie Milbria Annice (Cook) Kimbrel, and Jeremiah K. (Dink) Kimbrel’s and she was their seventh child but fourth living child and second daughter. Nancy Kimbrel was born in Miller County, Georgia on September 3, 1888. Stephen Grover Cleveland was our 22nd. President when Nancy was born. Nancy Kimbrel Married Counce Allen Sheffield on November 13, 1910. Counce Allen Sheffield was the son of Molly, Mary F. (Coleman) Sheffield, and Arthur Fletcher Sheffield. Nancy and Counce were always helpful to all of the Kimbrel and Sheffield families. Nancy never worked outside her home, but she would have been a very good nurse or maybe a doctor. When anyone of the Kimbrel & Sheffield family got sick Nancy always came to their house and she could diagnose and treat all of their conditions with some type of medicine. She knew a remedy for just about every ailment. She was not bossy and overbearing just helpful. There was probably no woman in the county that cook more food and feed more people than Nancy. If anyone was near Counce would invite them in to eat as she had always cooked a table full. All of the food that was not eaten was put into the slop bucket to be fed to the hogs and pigs. The next day she started all over again with the cooking. Nancy was also a good clothes maker and a good teacher on how to make clothes. She taught her niece how to cut out, from cloth and how to sew and make her own clothes. Nancy and Counce had four children, their only daughter Fletcher Mylbra Sheffield, born on March 27, 1912, Arthur C. Sheffield born February 3, 1914, Jerry Roscoe Sheffield born on March 8, 1916 and Counce Sheffield Jr. born on July 2, 1919. Their daughter Fletcher Mylbra Sheffield only lived three years and died on November 9, 1915. Counce was as strict as they come with their three sons and raised them with an iron hand. Although Counce himself smoked cigarettes all of their life and Counce knew that all three of them smoked also, not one of them would ever light a cigarette or smoke a cigarette in his presence as long as he lived. Counce and Nancy Sheffield lived in an older house facing highway 91 on the section of farmland that was given to Nancy by her father Jeremiah Dink Kimbrel. They only lived in this house for a short time and then they moved to another house just off Dutch Cook Road and their three sons were raised in this house. Then in about 1940 Counce had a new house constructed on his land and they moved into the new house and lived there for the rest of their lives. Counce was a very good successful manager and had good people working for him on the farmland that they owned because no one can recall a time when Counce did a day’s work himself and they always had a good car for transportation. After Gertrude moved to Colquitt, Counce and Nancy’s home became the family meeting place. When they moved into their new home Counce had a country store constructed across the road from their home and they operated that store for a few years, but they did not keep it running for very long. Counce Sheffield died on December 15, 1961 and he was 74 years old. After Counce died, Nancy did learn to drive an automatic shift automobile, but she would only drive up Avenue road, (a county unpaved road) to her son Roscoe’s store and back down Avenue road to her home, nowhere else. Nancy Kimbrel Sheffield died on February 10, 1974; she was 86 years old.
