LeRoy Kimbrel was Millie Milbria Annice (Cook) Kimbrel, and Jeremiah K. (Dink) Kimbrel’s second child but first living child. LeRoy Kimbrel was born in Miller County, Georgia on September 29, 1879.
LeRoy and the other Jeremiah Dink Kimbrel children went to a school that was about 3 or 4 miles away from their home and they either walked or were transported by horse and buggy. The school was only open about five months a year so that the school children could work the crops. No one had much of an advantage but some of the children went on to the school in Colquitt which was farther away, but LeRoy desired something better than plowing behind a mule, so he went up to Columbus Georgia to attend training classes at a business school. While he was attending the business school classes he met and married a beautiful lady named Leila Urquhart who was always an asset to LeRoy and was a beautiful lady until the day that she died at 93 years old. After their marriage they soon returned to Miller County GA and lived in Cook town which was a thriving community with several stores and businesses and one of those was a cotton gin. During the time that they lived in Cook town LeRoy worked in several of those stores and in addition to her house work Leila did dressmaking and alterations on men’s clothing. They were very active in their own Methodist church and attended other denominations churches and even tent revivals. Later they moved to Colquitt and lived in a house on Main Street and were quite involved in community activities. LeRoy was a member of the Colquitt Men’s Band they wore dark suits and bow ties and played at many events. LeRoy opened a furniture store in Colquitt and Louise and Ouida Ann grew up in Colquitt attended school there and spent their early teens in Colquitt and even though they later moved to Florida they always called Colquitt home. Later LeRoy moved his family to Panama City Florida where he bought some swamp land and created a business digging, selling and shipping Pear Moss. Later he started a nursery selling plants and he also did some real estate work. They were also active in church, Louise and Ouida Ann were both talented musicians and Louise was the music teacher at the high school and pianist at the First Methodist Church for many years. LeRoy was a very congenial man who had s Will Rogers type humor, well learned for his time, where his family enjoyed the best of life. LeRoy Kimbrel died on May 1952 in Panama City Florida, he was 73 years old.
