Loretta was the daughter of Stephen Calvin and Zilpha Jane Griffith Bailey. She was the wife of Peter E. Long, and mother of one son, Delton E.,who was killed in WW II.

Her siblings were William Arthur, Theodocia (Miller), Thomas Dawson, Rutha Jane (Tarpley), Luzena (died young), Henry Stanton and Everett Prince.

Loretta's father, Stephen, died in 1900 leaving Zilpha to raise the children alone. The building of the Blue Ridge Lake and Dam forced the family to relocate, and Zilpha and the boys moved to Polk County, Tennessee. Rutha stayed in Fannin county, Loretta moved to Alabama, and Theodocia moved to Huntington, West Virginia.
