A son of Jeremiah Davidson Conwell and Christina Carruthers, he was a farmer at Stillwater before going off to the Civil War. He served in the 6th Independent Battery Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery as a private and was a cannoneer. He was struck down by typhoid fever while fighting at Stones River and died in the Army hospital at Murfreesboro. His family in Ohio were notified of his serious illness and his father and brother, Jerry, traveled by train and were able to see him briefly before he died.
