Maggie Schlappi was the 9th child of Samuel and Mary Ann (Zimmerman) Schlappi. She was born in Delta, Fulton Co., Ohio. They lived on a tract that her grandfather, Christian Schlappi had purchased from the U.S. Govt. in 1834 for $1.50/acre. When she was seven years of age, the family sold their farm in Delta and purchased a parcel in Castleton, Barry Co., Michigan. In July, 1881 the family again moved to Eaton Rapids, Michigian. Later that year, Maggie was admitted to the Kalamazoo Michigan Insane Asylum, where she resided until her death in 1897. Per cemetery notes contributed by Sandra Moore, Maggie was buried in Munger Cemetery at Eaton Rapids and then removed to Rosehill Cemetery where both her parents are buried.

Nov. 23, 1881, Maggie Schlappi, resident of Hamlin Twp., Eaton Co., Mich. was alleged insane by her father, who petitioned to admit her to the Kalamazoo Michigan Insane Asylum. In the petition he alleged that she had been insane "for the period of about one year and [was] in indigent circumstances...[was] unmarried, and [had] an estate in personal goods worth thirty or forty dollars." Nov. 25, 1881, a citation was issued for her to appear on Dec. 1, 1881 before the Probate Court in Charlotte, Eaton Co., Michigan. The deposition of 2 physicians was taken. Witnesses appearing were: mother, Mary [Zimmerman] Schlappi; brother, Samuel O. Schlappi; and brother in law, Charles H. Wilbur. It was ordered by C. Marion Jennings, Probate Judge, on Dec. 20, 1881, that Maggie Schlappi be admitted to the Kalamozoo Michigan Asylum For the Insane at the partial expense of the county of Eaton. (Eaton Co. Death cert. shows Maggie's parents as unknown, female, white, single, farmer's daughter, born in Mich and died on October 21, 1897 Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan at the age of 39 years, cause of death pulmorary hemorrhage. Burial was on October 22, 1897 Eaton Rapids, Michigan.
