"Ezra Schlappi, former Emmet county resident, died Saturday at Zion, Illinois, according to word received yesterday by relatives here. Mrs. Schlappi was 88 years of age and lived for many years at Epsilon, leaving there about twenty-seven years ago for the Illinois city where he has since made his home. He is survived by two sons and two daughters, Alfred Schlappi, who lives east of Petoskey; Winfred Schlappi and Miss Mina Schlappi, of Zion, and Mrs. June Tuttle, who lies in Wisconsin. The funeral and burial were to be at Zion."

Ezra Schlappi was the 2nd child of Samuel and Mary Ann (Zimmerman) Schlappi. He was born in Delta, Fulton Co., Ohio. His family lived on a tract that his grandfather, Christian Schlappi had purchased from the U.S. Govt. in 1834 for $1.50/acre. In Aug 1861, Ezra was mustered into the 38th Regt, OVI, Co. I (org. at Defiance, Ohio). His cousin, William (s/o John Schlappi) was mustered into the same Co. a month later. In June 1865, Ezra was appointed Corporal of his Regiment. A month later he was mustered out of service. While he was in the service, his family had moved from Delta, Ohio and purchased a parcel in Castleton, Barry Co., Michigan. In October 1865 he purchased a 24 acre tract of land close to his father's farm in Castleton. He purchased 40 more acres the following February. Then, in May 1866, he married at Eaton County, Michigan, Mary E. Wilbur, dau of Harman and Rebecca (Hitchcock). His sister Harriet Jane Schlappi married one his bride's brothers a few months later. In 1870, Ezra's family still resided at his Castleton farm. In the 1880 Census, Ezra's family was living on a farm in Littlefacer, Emmet Co., Michigan. In March 1904, Ezra was ordained an officer of the Christian Catholic Church. In 1905, his wife, Mary E. (Wilbur) died in Lake Co., Illinois. From 1910 to 1930, he is enumerated on the U.S. Federal Census of Benton Twp., Lake Co., Illinois. According to those later censuses, he was employed as a clerk in a creamery and as a fruit grower.
