In 1863, Samuel's parents sold the family farm in Fulton County and moved to Michigan, settling in Castleton, Barry County. On the 1880 Census, Samuel was living there, working as a "book canvasser".

Samuel secured a teaching position at Brown School, in Genesee Co., Michigan. There he met his future wife, Esther Mills, who was one of his students. Their marriage was solemnized in 1884, in Flint.

He moved his young family to Minneapolis, Kansas, and later to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked in the fabric import business.

He wrote a family record for his parents, in 1890.

Of his seven children, only three survived to adulthood. The family traveled back and forth to Southern California. His family was living there when he died. Some of the family correspondence survives.
