Mable Alsop Wheat 93, of Spotsylvania County departed this life on Saturday, December 4, 2010. Mrs. Wheat was born April 10, 1917 in Spotsylvania, Virginia. She was a longtime member of First Christian Church, Fredericksburg. She had worked at James Monroe High School and later retired from CIS Sportswear. She loved her family and traveled extensively with her daughter. She was preceded in death by her parents Addison Burley Alsop and Clara Payne Alsop; her husband, Freed S. Wheat; daughter, Barbara Ann Wheat; sister, Mattie Wilkerson; brothers, Lee Alsop, Payne Alsop and Rev. James H. Alsop. Survivors include her sister, Clara (Betty Lou) Massey and her husband, Walter of Spotsylvania; and many nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 7 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg with Rev. Joe Reed and Rev. Welford Orrock officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Billy Hearn, Jay Hearn, Roy Wilkerson, Michael Alsop, Robert Orrock, and Matt Faulconer. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, December 6 at the funeral home. The family would like to extend their thanks to her caregivers over the past few months. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Christian Church 1501 Washington Ave., Fredericksburg, VA 22401 or Mary Washington Hospice 5012 Southpoint Parkway Fredericksburg, VA 22407.
