Arthur Payne Alsop, age 82, Spotsylvania County died Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Alsop was a U. S. Navy World War 11 veteran, serving in the South Pacific on board the USS Vicksburg. He retired from Safeway Stores Inc. after 35 years of service as a delivery supervisor. Mr. Alsup was a member of VFW Post 3103. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Starling B. Alsop; two daughters, Kathy Wowk of Glen Burnie, MD., and Sandra Alsop of Spotsylvania; two grandchildren, Daryl J. Wowk and Danielle Wowk, both of Glen Burnie; a brother, the Rev. James Alsop of Bassett; two sisters, Mable Wheat and Betty Lou Massey, both of Spotsylvania; special nephews, Alex Brigden and Travis Brigden, both of Galloway, NJ and Roy Wilkerson of Spotsylvania; and numerous other nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 26, at Covenant Funeral Service, 4801 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA. 22408. Entombment will follow at the Chapel of Peace in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diaberes Association, Box 13067, Alexandria, VA. 22312; or the American Heart Association, Memorials Processing Center, Box 5216, Glen Allen VA. 23058. {He was a son of Burdell Addison Alsop and Clara Payne}
