The Rev. James H. Alsop, 85, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County.

He was born in Spotsylvania County on Feb. 5, 1924, to Addison Burley Alsop and Clara Payne Alsop. He was a U. S. Navy veteran serving as a Seabee during World War II.

He was a graduate of Spotsylvania High School, Bluefield College and Concord College, and went to seminary at Southeastern Theological Seminary, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity degree.

The Rev. Alsop had pastored Calvary Baptist Church in Meadow Bridge, W.Va.; Samuel Harris Baptist Mission in Chatham; Zion Baptist Church in Skippers; Fort Trial Baptist Church in Bassett, where he retired in 1989 and was given the honor of Pastor Emeritus; Mount Olivet Christian Church in Martinsville; and after retirement served as an interim minister for several different churches.

He was a member of the Virginia Baptist Board, served as moderator of Henry County Baptist Association for two years, was past president of the Henry County Ministerial Association, former chaplain for the Henry County Sheriff's Department, past chairman of Volunteer Chaplains at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry County, and was involved in numerous other organizations.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Lee Alsop, Payne Alsop and Kenneth English and sister Mattie Wilkerson.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ann Curtis Alsop; one son, Mike Alsop and wife Bobbi of Bowling Green; one daughter, Charlotte Krovic and husband John of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Sarah, Michael, Adam and Brian; and two sisters, Mable Wheat of Fredericksburg, and Betty Lou Massey of Spotsylvania.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Fort Trial Baptist Church, with Dr. Joey McNeill officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Fort Trial Baptist Church Building Fund, 170 Oak Level Road, Stanleytown, Va. 24168 or the American Cancer Society, Box 3907, Martinsville, Va. 24115.
