Mr. Gilkerson was extremely active for a person of his advanced years although he had failed to some extent during the past year. He had continued to do his usual activities around his home, and his unexpected death yesterday morning came as a shock to both his family and to his host of friends.
A son of the late William Gilkerson and Susan Showalter Gilkerson, he was born on June 15, 1873 in the Fairview Church community, near here, where he made his home until fifteen years ago when he moved to Mt. Crawford.
Mr. Gilkerson devoted his life to farming until he retired several years ago.
On Dec. 21, 1896, he married Miss Alice Blanche Glover, who survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Luther (Edith) Landram, of Staunton; Mrs. George (Carolyn) Doome, of Staunton and Mrs. Charles (Irene) Burgess, of Harrisonburg; two sons, Ward Gilkerson of Harrisonburg; and LaVeran Gilkerson of Mt. Crawford. He also leaves the following grandchildren: Mrs. Robert Smiley of Staunton; Cecil (Philly) Gilkerson, of Harrisonburg; Miss Mary Elizabeth Burgess of Miami, Fla.; William Gilkerson, serving in the U. S. Navy; and Griffin and Jo Ann Gilkerson, both of Mt. Crawford. A niece, Mrs. Mary Belle Clatterbuck of Washington also survives.
A daughter, Miss Madalyne L. Gilkerson, preceded him in death in October 1952 and a brother, John Gilkerson, died a number of years ago.
Mr. Gilkerson possessed a kind and friendly personality and had a host of friends. He was a devoted husband and father and a kind neighbor and friend. He possessed deep religious convictions and was a lifelong member of the Mr. Gilkerson was active in politics and was a staunch Republican. He served for a number of years as deputy commissioner of Revenue, under Mrs. Charles Estep; and served a deputy sheriff under the late Mr. Luther Bazzle. He was a member of the Rockingham County electoral board at the time of his death.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two-thirty from the chapel of Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. The Rev. C. E. Burkert, the Rev. W. H. Groff, and the Rev. David P. Glover, will conduct the services and burial will be in the family lot in the Mt. Crawford Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be P. K. Shank, Earl Carver, J. Hubert Fix, Claude W. Craun, Floyd J. Huffman, J. Otis Rodeffer, M. Julius Armentrout and Lester D. Hoover.
Honorary pallbearers will be C. C. Michael, Earl C. Wise, O. D. Landis, Ray H. Hulvey, H. D. Harman, Charles Smiley, Lawrence Hoover, W. J. Kaylor, William H. Byrd, J. Robert Switzer, Charles S. Estep, Roger Burgess, Russell Stroop, Dr. H. G. Middlekauff, Jack Layman, S. H. Callender, C. T. (Neil) Callender, Charles Earman, and Lester Childs.
Miss Ruth Spitzer will play the organ selections for the services.
The Body now rests at the Lindsey Funeral Home where friends and pallbearers are asked to meet Thursday afternoon at two-fifteen. The relatives have been asked to meet at the Gilkerson Residence in Mt. Crawford, Thursday afternoon at two o'clock where a brief service will be held prior to leaving for the funeral chapel.
