Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Gilkerson Burgess, 89, of 120 Wayside Drive, Bridgewater, will be held at 11 o'clock on Friday morning from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Fridinger officiating. Entombment will be in the East Lawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Her body now rests at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends between 7 and 8 o'clock Thursday evening.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Rockingham Memorial Hospital or the Hospice Unit at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in memory of Mrs. Burgess.
A daughter of the late A.R. and Blanche Glover Gilkerson, she was born on March 1, 1902, in Rockingham County and graduated from Rockingham Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1925.
She had made her home in Mount Crawford for 15 years, Harrisonburg for 12 years, and Miami, Fla., for 25 years prior to returning to Bridgewater, where she had been making her home at the Retirement Village since April 1983.
Mrs. Burgess was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and was a former president of the Blinn Bible Class of the church. She was a member of the Alumnae Association, American Nurses Association, and the Virginia 9th District Association.
Mrs. Burgess did some private duty nursing with the 5th District in Miami and accompanied by plane ill senior citizens to their homes in the USA after spending their winter vacations in Florida.
On June 6, 1926, she married Charles Patterson Burgess, a rural mail carrier in Mount Crawford for 42 years, who preceded her in death on Nov. 29,1976.
She is survived by one sister, Carolyn Dooms of Staunton; one brother, Ward Gilkerson of Harrisonburg; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Burgess, in 1976.
Mrs. Burgess died at 2:40 Tuesday afternoon at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.
