Miss Madalyne Lydia Gilkerson, 48, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. r. Gilkerson, and a popular resident and Beauty Shop operator of Mt. Crawford, died at one thirty Thursday afternoon at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Miss Gilkerson underwent an operation a year ago and had seemingly recovered. She was injured this year on the 24th of August of this year when she fell while riding a bus at Burketown. She had been a patient at the hospital for the past five week and little hope had been held for her recovery in recent weeks.

A daughter of A. R. Gilkerson and Mrs. Blanche Glover Gilkerson, she was born on March 9, 1904 in the North River community where she made her home prior to moving to Mt. Crawford.

Miss Gilkerson, who was very popular with people of all ages had owned and operated The Beauty Box Beauty Shoppe at Mt. Crawford for the past fifteen years, where her ability and personality won her a large following.

She was a member of Fairview Methodist Church but since coming to Mt. Crawford had attended the Methodist Church there where she was a regular attendant and took an active part in the various organization of the Church. She was a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and the Potter Memorial Sunday school class.

Besides her father, a well known farmer, and he mother, she is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Luther (Edith) Landram and Mrs. George (Carolyn) Doome, both of Staunton and Mrs. Charles P.(Irene) Burgess, of Harrisonburg; two brothers, Ward H. Gilkerson, of Harrisonburg and W. L. Gilkerson of Mt. Crawford. Three nieces and three nephews and a number of aunts and uncle also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o’clock from the chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home on South Main Street in Harrisonburg. Her pastor the Rev. Walter G. Bangle, will have charge of the services, assisted by the Rev. David F. Glover. Burial will be in the family lot in the Mt. Crawford cemetery.

Members of the Potter Memorial Sunday School Class of the Mt. Crawford Methodist Church Will serve as honorary escorts.

The body now rests at the Lindsey Funeral Home where friends, pallbearers, and honorary escorts are asked to meet Saturday afternoon.

Relatives are asked to meet at the Gilkerson Residence in Mt. Crawford, Saturday afternoon at one-thirty where a brief service will be held prior to leaving for the funeral chapel.
