Nils Frederick Olsen was born 4 February 1825 in Norway to Ole Nilsen (1784-1866) and Gjertrud Persdtr Nilsen (1787-1869). He married Pernille Pedersdtr (1823-1905) in 1851. They had 4 daughters and 3 sons, all of whom emigrated to the U.S. Nils emigrated to the U.S. about 1880 to set up a farm in Wisconsin, but he fell ill and died 4 February 1882 at the age of 57. He is buried in the Saint Olaf Cemetery in Burnett County, Wisconsin next to his eldest daughter, Elin Randine Nilsen Borup (1851-1917).
