GATE CITY, Va. — Delaney Nelson Herron, Sr., 93, passed away Monday (June 23, 2008) at Holston Valley Medical Center.
He was born in Scott County, Va. on April 11, 1915 and was the son of the late Hiram Delaney Herron and Elizabeth Ann Smith Herron. He was a retired co-owner of City Exxon Service Station in Gate City, Va. Mr. Herron was a member of First Baptist Church of Gate City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy Atha Herron, Gate City, Va.; son, Delaney Herron, Jr. and wife, Kay, Gate City, Va.; grandchildren, Melissa Herron Smith and husband, Rod, Gate City, Va., Michael Herron and wife, Ashley, Knoxville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Chase Smith, Taylor Smith and Chloe Smith all of Gate City, Va.; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Colonial Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and other times at the son's residence.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 8 p.m. with Rev. Jeff DeBoard and Rev. Mark Estepp officiating.
Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Herron, Rod Smith, Ronnie Herron, Danny Herron, Joe Herron, and Rickey Davis.
Honorary pallbearers will be Garvey McGee, Charles Carter, T.L. Herron, and Lawrence Herron.
The family will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Gate City, Memorial Building Fund, P.O. Box 97, Gate City, Va. 24251 or Wellmont Hospice, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, Tenn. 37620.
