GATE CITY, Va. - Callie Elizabeth Smith, 97, entered into rest on Monday (Sept. 16, 2002) at her residence with her family by her side.
Mrs. Smith was born in Scott County, Va., on Sept. 25, 1904 to the late Hiram Herron and Betsy Elizabeth Smith Herron.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Y. Smith in 1977; a son Frederick R. (Fred) Smith, killed on D-Day, June 6, 1944; two sisters, Lona Smythe and Pearl Lane; two brothers, Thomas and Robert Herron; and a son-in-law, Paul Davis in 1994.
She was a volunteer nurses aide at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center and also at Mountain Empire Older Citizens. Mrs. Smith was of the Methodist faith and a member of Gate City Methodist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Katherine S. Davis, Nickelsville, Va.; three brothers, Delaney, Pat and Garland Herron, all of Gate City, Va.; grandchildren, Rick Davis and wife Carmel, Paula Davis Brickey; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Bricquet, Rachel Beattie, Brandon
Davis; great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Beattie; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Gate City Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating.
Music will be provided by the Lee Smith Singers.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. The family will be meeting at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
