Moses R. Porter was the seventh of eight children born to Moses Porter (Rev. War Major) and Sarah Kilham. He was born in Worthington, MA July 6, 1779. He married Lydia Wilson on Oct. 9, 1802 in Monkton, Addison County, VT.

Moses was a doctor and farm owner. He left Vermont and moved to Richland, Oswego County, NY in 1807 and from there went west to Flowler, Trumbull county, Ohio in 1818. He is described as an active practitioner of medicine; a man of fine physique; tall and very particular about his person and dress.
