Moses Porter was the fifth of seven children born to Experience Porter, Jr. and Abigail Safford. On May 12, 1765 at Preston, New London, CT, he married Sarah Kilham,daughter of Phineas and Thankful Hill Kilham. Their first five children were born in Norwich, CT and the next at Worthington, MA. In 1780 they moved to a farm south and close to Pawlet, Rutland County, VT where they spent the rest of their lives. Moses was a physician in Pawlet, VT.

Major Moses Porter was in the Revolutionary War. He fought in the battles of Bunker Hill, Long Island and Saratoga and at the surrender of Burgoyne. He was a Selectman at Pawlet, VT in 1786 and 1787 and a Deacon in the Congregational Church.
