Funeral services for James William "J.W." Covington, 80, of Archer City were held with Garry Mahan, minister of Florence, Ala., and David Mahan, minister of Brenham Church of Christ, officiating.

Born in the Bittercreek Community in Young County, Covington moved to Archer County.

He owned and operated Covington's Meat Locker until 1962 when he moved to Shattuck, OK, where he was ranch manager for Schultz Cattle Company. He became manager of Donal Sell's Farm in Booker in 1971. When he retired in 1987, he moved to Olney. He and Oleta Whitsitt married in Olney on 5 April 1989. He had lived in Archer City since 1990. He was a breeder and owner of thoroughbred race horses for many years.

Survivors: wife; son - Charles E. Covington of Archer City; two daughters - Glenda Quick of Hurst, Mary Sue Meller of Lometa; two step-daughters - Ron Maxwell and Jack Whitsitt, both of Archer City; four sisters - Bessie Birdwell of Olney, Bobbie Gunter of Wichita Falls, Eulalia Ryder of Crowell, Pauline Alberico of Pueblo, CO; eight grandchildren two great-grandchildren.
