In 1830 at age 18, Charles went to Buffalo, NY as a Shipping Clerk. At 24 yrs he then went to Chicago in 1836 and then to Lake Geneva where he bought with his cousin, Orrin Hatch Coe, one-fourth interest in Brink's claim to the mill-site. Taking no thought for himself, he seemed to labor for the good of others. He was extremely gentle and kind to all with whom he associated, and the same time utterly fearless both physically and morally. His death created a void in the circle of old pioneers as well as in that of his family which can never be filled.
