Alice Virginia Thorne Butler, 81, of Greenville, was called home on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. She was born December 4, 1927, in Marlbrook, Virginia, the daughter of the late John Edward and Effie Mae Chittum Thorne.

Mrs. Butler was a member of Lighthouse Church of the Living God in Cornwall, Virginia. She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and was always there to help them. She also loved Bingo and was an active member of the Blue Ridge Moose Lodge in Fairfield. She retired from Hollister with 15 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin William Butler; one daughter, Glenda Faye Poore; one granddaughter, Sandra Kaye Swisher Cole; three brothers, Alfred Leo Chittum, Paul Eugene Thorne and Albert David Thorne.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Puckett and her husband, Joe, of Raphine; one son, Bobby Butler and his wife, Wanda, of Vesuvius; one sister, Ethel Ward and her husband, Fred, of Stuarts Draft; three brothers, Jerry Thorne and his wife, Ethel, of Fairfield, Donald Thorne of Buena Vista and Harold Thorne and his wife, Lillian, of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Lee and Wayne Smith, Theresa Bowling, Jody Puckett, Scottie Swisher, Kristi, Chad and Dustin Butler and Kandice Smith; 14 great- grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2009 at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church in Steeles Tavern with the Reverend Jay Thorne and the Reverend Dennis Bradley officiating. Interment will follow at the Concord Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Fairfield.
Active pallbearers will be grandchildren, Lee and Wayne Smith, Jody Puckett, Chad and Dustin Butler, and Roger Bowling.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hubert Puckett, Joshua Smith, Robert Fix, Tommy and Cody Swisher. The family will begin receiving friends at 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2009, at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1870 Stuarts Draft Highway.
