Ruth, whom we called "Grandma"—but whom others called "Pat"—was the daughter of George Joseph "Grandpa" Maurer and Blanche Martha "Grandma" Shoults (N-O-T Shoulte, Schultz, Shults, or other misspellings, as are rampant), was born on 28 June 1917 in North Dupo, Co., St. Clair Co., IL, where her father and other family members were working for the railroad at the time.

As a kid, Grandma also lived in the Saint Louis area and, for a while, in Louisville, Co., KY (where her younger brother was born and several of the extended family members worked for Reynold's Wrap), before her family returned to St. Louis. Her siblings were George Elroy Maurer and Verna Lorraine (Maurer) Beshears.

Grandma married my grandfather, Stanley Steven "Stosh" Zielinski, son of Wojciech "George" Adalbert Zielinski and Feodora "Feska"/"Kate" Slyvka of Saint Louis, on 2 February 1936 in Waterloo, Monroe Co., IL. For a while, they lived in the Kosciusko Neighborhood and even briefly had a restaurant there.

After their divorce (1943), Grandma married Burl Chester Carrico, son of Chester Arthur "Ottopa" and Maude B. [Darr] "Ottoma" Carrico. That wedding took place on 28 July 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Soulard, St. Louis City.

Grandma had two boys by Stosh, Stanley Steven, Jr. and James Phillip (called Sonny and Jimmy when kids, Stan and Jim later), and two girls by Burl, Deborah Allene and Pamela Beryl (a.k.a. Debbie and Pam).

After leaving St. Louis, Grandma and Burl, her mother Blanche, her girls, and her brother Elroy and his family all lived in Florida for years.

Pam and Debbie still live there, as do some of Grandma's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. And maybe some great-greats. I'm behind on Facebook.
