Great-Grandpa Maurer was the son of Frank J. Maurer, Sr. and Katherine "Katie" Kirchhoff.

Grandpa's mother died when he was quite young and for a time he lived with his grandmother, Katherine [Schmidt] Kirchhoff. Two of his brothers lived with the family of his married sister, Lulu Johnston.

Grandpa was in the US Navy, discharged just prior to WWI...see the most bodacious photo at the upper right.

He married Blanche Martha Shoults on 5 September 1916 in St. Louis, MO. Their kids were Ruth Margarite "Pat" [Maurer] Zielinski / Carrico; George Elroy Maurer, Sr.; and Verna Lorraine [Maurer] Beshears.

In 1920, George, Blanche, Grandma (Ruth), and Uncle Elroy are living in Louisville, KY with George's brother, William Kirchhoff Maurer and his family. Uncle William is a Foreman at a tin foil factory, and George is working (presumably at the same factory) as a Roller. Unsure whether or not this is the Reynolds Wrap (Reynolds Metals) gang, but that company was headquartered there.

This explains how Uncle Elroy was born in Kentucky when the family primarily lived in the Metro St. Louis area.

The 1930 Census shows Grandpa (George) back in St. Louis, working as as a factory laborer, but the factory was not specified. Uncle William, by that time, had moved on to North Carolina, where he lived the rest of his life.

In 1940, the census indicated Grandpa was a laborer involved with "reforestation." This may have been through a government program, but we have no info on that. The family lived at 2031A Third Street at the time.

They were living at 307a Russell Avenue when Grandpa died.

Daddio says he remembers his grandfather taking his little bucket down to the tavern and coming back with beer...then sitting on the porch and cooling off in the warm weather with this condensation-covered treat.
